Everyone on the planet has a birthday and for most people it’s the one special day that they can feel unapologetic about making it about themselves. For us mothers, our birthday tends to be just like any other day; filled with never ending details of our children, significant other, household responsibilities, work, and any and everything else but ourselves. So you can imagine that when my birthday rolls around you would expect to see me going about my daily routine as usual. But not this year!
I’m turning 43 and I’m ready for it! I can be honest and tell you that I was sad for 2 seconds, well maybe 10 seconds. I was sad because I’m what some call middle age, but the light bulb went off in my head that 43 is a special year. You see 4+3=7 and the number 7 is a special number for us Christians. It is the number of spiritual perfection and is stamped on every good work of God. I consider myself a product of His good work, so in honor of my special day I’m sharing 7 ways you can make your birthday both memorable and amazing!
1. Watch the sun rise
One of the most amazing things you can do is get up early in the morning and take a seat outside to just wait for the sun to rise. Not only is it beautiful but its peaceful and it sets the tone for the day.
2. Go for a walk/ run
It’s not just good for your body, but it’s good for your mind. You can take this time to connect with God. This is a good time to show gratitude for your previous years and seek direction for the next year.
3. Make a list of the things you learned that year
This is an amazing idea no matter the age. Write down something you learned for every year of your life. For example, I’m 43 so there would be 43 things I learned the previous year. It can be something you learned about your self or a life lesson and then take that list and save it in a keep box for your children.
4. Write your vision for the upcoming year
Now some people do this at New Year’s, but I find it better for myself to do it on my birthday. Maybe because I know I’m a year older and it reminds me of the games I play on my cell phone. I can’t wait to get to the next level, and it gives me something to look back on to see if I accomplished it.
5. Have a spa day
Listen. It’s your day and you deserve to be pampered from head to toe. Indulge with a full body massage, a manicure, pedicure or facial. You deserve the works, and if only for one day a year, you need to be treated like royalty. Don’t cut any corners on yourself.
6. Buy yourself a gift
This is so important. I used to have a hard time spending large sums of money on myself. I would see something I liked but when I saw the price tag I was like, that’s alright. What I realized was that I only did that when it came to purchasing something for myself. If it was something for one of my children, I wouldn’t think twice about the cost. I make it a priority to get myself something nice each year. You deserve the best!
7. Go somewhere you have never been
Each year I make it a point to go somewhere I have never been. I’m not talking about spending loads of money traveling, although that would be nice. I’m talking about going anywhere I have never been. This can be somewhere local, like going to a museum I’ve been meaning to go to for years. The whole point of the adventure is to expose yourself to something different.
Your birthday is not a day to be selfish, but rather to be self-full. Self-care is so important and what better way to take care of ourselves even if only one day a year, than on the day we entered this world.
How do you celebrate your birthday?
